Oromo Evangical Church of Houston

Oromo Evangelical Church was born in 2007 from a Bible study and prayer group. The main purpose was to encourage each other by coming together for prayers and bible study. As the number of members increased, the group then decided to start a formal fellowship by finding own space. In April 2008, organized service started at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church. The 2009 social statement by ELCA worldwide assembly resolution on human sexuality put under test the Oromo Evangelical Church in Houston. For this reason, the Oromo Evangelical Church departed from ELCA, and at the end of December 2010, the church lost her pastor and a place of worship and scattered like a ship without a shepherd because our church members voted for the truth of the gospel.

After carefully examined the vision statement and confessional standard of the NALC, the group decided to join the NALC in July 2011.

Our mission is to know God through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and to equip believers through discipleship Showing God’s love. We strive to reach out to the hungry Oromo community in Houston Texas area in a language and a culture meaningful to them, building them to be an authentic community of believers and sending them in to ministry and to reach a hungry world with Jesus Christ through obedience to the great commission

 

• We have two sacraments. Baptism and communion we believe that God comes to us through sacrament.

• We peach and teach Gospel of Jesus Christ whic is a vital power of God to give salvation and life transforming relationship with Jesus Christ. 

• We believe that  we are saved by grace of God only not by good work. 

• We worship in our native language Afan Oromo

The Oromos are an ethnic group found in Ethiopia, northern Kenya, and parts of Somalia. With 30 million members, they constitute the single largest ethnicity in Ethiopia and approximately 34.49% of the population according to the 2007 census. Their native language is Oromo (also called Afaan Oromoo and Oromiffa), which is part of the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. (taken from wikipedia)

Oromo represent the largest cultural group in Ethiopia, as well as one of the largest in all of Africa, estimated to be over 27.2 million people. For many centuries the Oromo functioned with their own political, cultural and religious systems as an independent nation, separate from Abyssinian rule. Their independence was lost through the systematic invasion and brutal conquest of their territory in the 1880’s as part of the military effort supported by European to build what is now Ethiopia.

Land Size:  The surface area is about 600,000 square kilometers. Out of the 50 or so African countries, it is exceeded in size by only 17 countries. It is larger than France, and if Cuba, Bulgaria, and Britain were put together, they would be approximately equal to Oromia in size.

Oromo Exilic Situation: Oromo immigrants have come to USA for many reasons and with different circumstance. But most of them came to the USA because of persecution for their beliefs by the previous communist government. After the fall of the communist regime, the Oromo were persecuted by the present government because of their ethnicity.
